The goal was to create a restaurant space in the recognizable style of Chicago bars in the 20s and 30s. 20th century, using some elements of Art Deco, but without the flashy "sequins" and "sequins". Do not use expensive solutions to implement the Art Deco style in the interior.
The complex ergonomics of the building made it impossible to accommodate a sufficient number of seats. Part of the walls of the hall was "sewn up" with white tiles, which destroyed the space and atmosphere. After it was dismantled, the brickwork was found to be in poor condition — it was badly damaged. We also faced difficulties in the process of carrying out engineering communications and when trying to preserve what was left of the brickwork.
The restaurant specializes in Chicago cuisine: the days of jazz, Gatsby-style parties and closed underground bars during prohibition. This image formed the basis of the restaurant's concepts and interior. We proposed to design a timeless interior with references understandable to a wide audience.
First of all, we worked with the layout: we proposed to change the location of the entrance to the restaurant, as well as expand the balcony area, which significantly increased the number of seats. At the entrance, we placed a vestibule — a large glass cube with metal decoration in the form of circles symbolizing coins, as well as the main dish of the restaurant — Chicago pizza. Once in the vestibule, the guest seems to cross a "time portal": the doors with metal inserts emphasize the idea of exclusivity, closeness and refer to the period when it was impossible to freely enter such establishments. At the same time, the pen with the name of the restaurant engraved on it gives a feeling of luxury. After the vestibule, the guest descends to the main floor of the restaurant, like gangsters who entered illegal bars during prohibition.
There is a bar on the ground floor. Due to the limited space, the bar shelves are located in the window openings behind the bar on both sides of the restaurant logo. The veneered facade of the bar with an ornament in the form of circles echoes the metal forging on the vestibule and the art object installed under the ceiling and symbolizes coins or casino chips.
Opposite the kitchen, next to the bar, there is a performance area framed by a distinctive burgundy curtain, which is embroidered with the restaurant's logo. This element serves as a kind of "identification mark": the photos and videos from the performances will immediately show where the event took place. The walls that were originally in the room had a defect: the bottom of the brickwork was damaged, but I did not want to "divide" them vertically with different finishing materials. Therefore, together with the artists, we painted a brick, thereby imitating the real masonry. And so that the color does not "argue" with the shade of the real brick, we made a gradient stretch from maroon-brown to red-brick. In addition, such decorativeness adds an even greater "underground" effect. The chosen color scheme conveys the play of light and shadow well and allows you to combine modernity with that time: it seems that the brickwork at the bottom is older, and the upper part has been restored. There are wooden tiles on the floor, which also refers to the past: natural materials, there are no streamlined shapes and modern, fashionable elements inherent in our time. The geometry of the tables and the inlays on their surface refer to the Art Deco style. By changing the location of the tables and shifting them from different sides, you can get different patterns. This is especially noticeable from the balcony, where the most prominent and "status" places are located.
A striking detail of the space was an art object suspended in the zone of the second light - a retro car "floating" in the air. To create it, metal balls placed on different levels were used, illuminated from above in order to emphasize the shape of the car. The object serves as a spectacular alternative to expensive lighting installations or a real car.
In addition to seating on the balcony, there is a separate private lounge and bathrooms on the second floor. The bathroom booths are styled like bank safes: it seems that the doors lead to the vault, and the wall next to it imitates bank cells. This area has not only become an excellent and recognizable selfie spot, but also has additional functionality thanks to decorative panels: household supplies such as detergents, mops, rags, etc. are located behind the cells.
The restaurant's room is decorated with murals made according to our sketches: on the ground floor there is an inscription Cadillac, and on the second floor there is a map of Chicago with the corresponding inscription. These decorative elements, as well as the complex gradient coloring of the bricks, were created by artist Evgenia Lampitskaya.
